The thought of a basement flooding out and the related damages and exorbitant costs is every homeowner’s worst nightmare. Unfortunately, in Nassau County, basement flooding is an all-too-common occurrence, as the region is surrounded by water, experiences heavy rains on a semi-regular basis, and humidity levels tend to be high. There are several other factors that cause flooding in a basement, too, such as pipe leaks, water heater malfunctions, cesspool overflows, and drainage issues.
Thankfully, there’s a way that you can protect your Nassau County home – and your pocket – from the havoc that flooding can cause. How? By having a Mineola, NY basement waterproofing contractors install a waterproofing system. You don’t want to hire just any basement waterproofing company, however; for a job this important, you want to make sure that you hire the most reliable contractor you can find. How can you do that? By scheduling consultations with several companies and asking some key questions.
When you consult with each basement waterproofing company, here are some key questions that you should consider asking.
How long have you been in business?
Hiring a well-established Mineola, NY basement waterproofing contractor that has been serving the Nassau County community for several years is highly recommended. The longer a company has been in business, the more knowledge, hands-on experience, and expertise they will have; all factors that are crucial for developing and installing an effective waterproofing system.
Are you insured?
Ask each basement waterproofing company you consult with if they’re insured. A reputable Mineola, NY basement waterproofing contractor will have both liability coverage, and if they employ a crew, workers’ compensation coverage. In the event that something unexpected happens, these policies will protect you from having to pay for any unforeseen – and exorbitant – costs. Ask to see proof of their insurance, and confirm that their policies are valid.
What solutions do you propose?
There are a lot of issues that can contribute to moisture in your Nassau County basement. In addition to installing a waterproofing system, you may have a plumbing problem, a drainage issue, or a leaky window that needs to be addressed. A certified and experienced Mineola, NY basement waterproofing contractor will perform a thorough assessment to accurately pinpoint water intrusion points and will devise the most effective plan of action to effectively protect your home.
Do you offer a price estimate?
A credible Mineola, NY basement waterproofing professional will always offer a free written price estimate. After performing a thorough assessment of your Nassau County property and devising a customized plan of action, they will provide you with a detailed estimate that will highlight all costs, and they’ll review the estimate with you. Be wary of a basement waterproofing company that only offers a verbal estimate, or that charges a fee for a written price quote.

Mineola is a village in and the county seat of Nassau County, Long Island, New York, United States. The population was 18,799 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from an Algonquin Chief, Miniolagamika, which means ‘pleasant village’.
The central, flat, grassy part of Long Island was originally named ‘Hempstead Plains’. In the 19th century, various communities were started. One of them was called ‘Hempstead Branch’, and finally, ‘Mineola’.
Long Island was part of Henry Hudson’s original claim in the name of the Dutch East India Company dating as far back as 1609. In the 18th century, the Dutch and English settlers worked to clear farmland to start their life on the Hempstead Plains. It was in 1858 when this land was named after an Algonquin Indian Chief, Miniolagamika meaning, ‘Pleasant Village’. The name was later shortened and altered to ‘Mineola’.
From about 1787 until the 1870s, the area was the county seat for Queens County, in a section then known as Clowesville, just outside the present village boundaries. The western portion of Queens became a borough of New York City in 1898, and in 1899 Nassau County was formed from the part of Queens that did not so consolidate. Voters selected Mineola (in the Town of North Hempstead) to be the county seat for the new county of Nassau in November 1898(before Mineola incorporated as a village in 1906 and set its boundaries), winning out over Hicksville and Hempstead. The Garden City Company (founded in 1893 by the heirs of Alexander Turney Stewart)donated four acres of land for the county buildings just south of the Mineola train station and the present day Village of Mineola, in the Town of Hempstead.
