Top Causes of Basement Foundation Floor Cracks in Dix Hills, NY Homes

Of all the damages that your home may face, foundation damage is arguably the most severe. A foundation serves many functions; it supports your home, helps to prevent the structure from moving, provides insulation, blocks out moisture, and even prevents pest infiltration. If your foundation is a basement, it can also provide valuable storage and living space.

Since it’s so important, the foundation of your Suffolk County home needs to remain in excellent condition; but, like other parts of your house, the foundation can become damaged, and if your foundation is also a basement, floor cracks are one of the most common types of damage that can occur. Whether it’s a small fissure or a wide, gaping fracture, if you’ve discovered a crack in your basement floor, having it assessed by a Dix Hills, NY foundation crack repair contractor as soon as possible is important; however, you may be wondering what caused the damage in the first place. Here’s a look at some of the most common reasons why Suffolk County homeowners require professional basement crack repair services.

Settling

Settling is one of the most common causes of cracks in basement floors. Typically, settling occurs when the soil underneath the foundation compresses or shifts as a result of some type of powerful external force; poor drainage, erosion, a natural disaster, or even just the effects of gravity. When the soil that is supporting a heavy load becomes compressed, pressure is placed on the structure, which can cause a house to move downward. Over time, gravity will take its toll, and in order to relieve the pressure that is being placed on the structure, the house will tilt or shift. This tilting or shifting can place a great deal of stress on a basement floor, and cracks can develop.

Often cracks that are caused by settling appear in the corners of a basement floor. If your Suffolk County house shifts or tilts a lot, major cracks can occur and the integrity of the structure can become compromised. Eventually, the entire house could collapse. To avoid a major calamity, having the damage addressed by a reputable and experienced professional that specializes in basement crack repair is essential.

Erosion

Water erosion is another common factor that requires basement crack repair services in Suffolk County. When underground water continuously rushes under the floors, the concrete will wear away and weaken, and eventually, fractures can develop. Initially, the cracks may be minor, but if left unchecked, over time, the erosion will continue, the cracks will become worse, and you could be looking at serious problems. That’s why having a Dix Hills, NY foundation crack repair specialist assess the issue as soon as it’s detected is so important.

Excessive Moisture or Dryness

The moisture content in the soil that surrounds your Suffolk County home can have a major impact on the foundation. If the soil is over-saturated, perhaps as a result of heavy rainfall, too much watering, or improper drainage, the soil will swell and push inward on the walls of your base; a phenomenon known as hydrostatic pressure.

Like excessive moisture, overly dry soil can negatively affect your foundation, too. When it’s dry for a prolonged period of time, the moisture in the soil that surrounds your house will evaporate and contract. This can lead to the development of air pockets under the foundation, which can make your house shift, and that shifting can cause cracks in the floors.

Poor Craftsmanship

Unfortunately, one of the top causes of basement floor cracks is also one of the easiest to prevent: poor-quality craftsmanship. Since a foundation supports the total weight of your Suffolk County house, including the contents within it, and because it is exposed to such extreme conditions, it needs to be properly constructed of durable materials. If poor-quality materials are used, if the soil that was excavated when your home was constructed is filled in too quickly, or if too much fill dirt was dumped into the excavation site during the construction process, the foundation can be placed under even greater pressure, and eventually, it can crack under that pressure.

Frost Heave

Frost heave is another source of cracks in basement floors. This phenomenon can occur during the cold weather months, and it happens when the soil underneath your basement floors freezes, thaws, and expands. The movement in the ground can cause the floors to crack.

Importance of Professional Basement Wall Crack Repair

No matter what the cause, if the floors in your Suffolk County basement are cracking, no matter how minor those cracks appear, having a Dix Hills, NY foundation crack repair contractor inspect the damage as soon as possible is highly recommended. If the problem is left unchecked, further damage can occur, and eventually, you could be looking at major headaches and costly basement crack repairs.

The following are just some examples of the importance of having the cracks in your basement floors fixed.

Some information about Dix Hills, NY

Dix Hills is an affluent hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) on Long Island in the town of Huntington in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 26,892 at the 2010 census.

Settlers traded goods with the Indigenous Secatogue tribe for the land that became Dix Hills in 1699. The Secatogues lived in the northern portion of the region during the later half of that century. The land was known as Dick’s Hills. By lore, the name traces to a local native named Dick Pechegan, likely of the Secatogues. Scholar William Wallace Tooker wrote that the addition of the English name ‘Dick’ to the indigenous name ‘Pechegan’ was a common practice.

Tooker wrote that Pechegan’s wigwam and his planted fields became the hilly area’s namesake, known as the shortened ‘Dix Hills’ by 1911. The area was mostly used for farming until after World War II.

In the 1950s, Dix Hills and its neighbors Wyandanch and Melville, along with the area known as Sweet Hollow, proposed to incorporate as a single village. This village would have been known as the Incorporated Village of Half Hollow Hills, would have had an area of roughly 50 square miles (130 km2), and would have embraced the Half Hollow Hills Central School District (CSD 5). The plans were unsuccessful, and these areas would remain unincorporated.
