How to Tell if You Need to Call a Hicksville, NY Foundation Crack Repair Contractor
Your home is your castle. It shelters you from the elements, provides you with a comfortable and secure place to rest your head, and it’s where you and your loved ones make memories that will last a lifetime. Needless to say, your home is extremely important, and as such, it needs a strong basement foundation to stand on.
The foundation that your Nassau County home sits on has a direct impact on the integrity of the entire structure. Unfortunately, however, like any other component of your house, the basement foundation can degrade and sustain damages, and when that happens, you need to act fast and schedule an appointment with a Hicksville, NY foundation crack repair specialist right away. But how do you know when you need basement foundation repair services? By being proactive and examining the condition of your foundation on a regular basis.
It’s important to know what to look for and how to check your basement for signs of damage while that damage is still in the early stages. the sooner you detect a problem, the sooner you can have it corrected, which will help to prevent even more severe issues down the road. How do you check your basement for damages? Here’s a look at some helpful tips that you can use to inspect your foundation so you can determine if you need to contact a basement foundation repair contractor.
Inspect the Interior and Exterior Walls
When you’re assessing your basement foundation, cracks are the first thing that you should be on the lookout for. Cracks can be a sign that moisture has placed high amounts of pressure on the walls of the basement. They can also be a sign of ground shifting.
Cracks can appear on both the interior and exterior of the walls. When you’re inspecting the walls of your Nassau County home’s foundation, you don’t have to be alarmed by small cracks, because typically, the risks they pose are minimal; although small cracks do need to be monitored to see if they expand. If any major cracks are present in the walls, you’ll want to have a Hicksville, NY foundation crack repair professional assess them as soon as possible. Major cracks are concerning, as they can be a sign of serious damage. The longer you wait to have the cracks inspected, the bigger they’ll grow, and you’ll undoubtedly have even bigger (and costlier) issues on your hands.
Examine the Floors
Examine the floors on all levels of your Nassau County home, including the basement, the main floor, and any secondary floors. The floors can indicate the condition of your foundation. If the foundation is in good shape, the floors will be even and level; however, if the foundation is shifting or otherwise damaged, the floors can sag, dip, or slope, and they can even develop cracks. You may be able to feel these changes underfoot, or you might see visual signs of these issues.
If your floors seem off, schedule an appointment with a Hicksville, NY foundation crack repair contractor right away. Changes to the floors could be a sign of a number of issues, such as foundation upheaval or shifting; issues that need to be attended to by a professional as quickly as possible.
Test the Doors and Windows
Check the doors and windows in your Nassau County home. If they’re sticking and conditions are humid, it likely isn’t a cause for concern, as wood retains moisture and expands; however, if it isn’t humid and the doors and windows are sticking, that could be a sign of foundation trouble.
As the foundation shifts, the house moves with it, and the frames the doors and windows sit in can become imbalanced, and they won’t work properly. If you suspect that your doors and windows are sticking because of a problem with your basement foundation, schedule an appointment with a Hicksville, NY foundation crack repair contractor.
Leaks are another sign of foundation troubles that you should be on the lookout for. After it rains, get in the habit of checking the interior walls of your basement. It’s a good idea to check for leaks when it’s dry out, too. If there are any cracks in the walls, leaks can occur when it’s raining – and even when it’s not, as moisture in the soil that surrounds the basement can travel through.
Leaks – even seemingly minor ones – are a serious cause for concern and need to be addressed by a Nassau County basement foundation repair specialist as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the worse the problem will become, and eventually, you could be dealing with major flooding, mold growth, and serious structural damage.

Hicksville is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) within the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, New York, United States, on Long Island. The population of the CDP was 41,547 at the 2010 census.
Valentine Hicks, son-in-law of abolitionist and Quaker preacher Elias Hicks, and eventual president of the Long Island Rail Road, bought land in the village in 1834 and turned it into a station stop on the LIRR in 1837. The station became a depot for produce, particularly cucumbers for a Heinz Company plant. After a blight destroyed the cucumber crops, the farmers grew potatoes. It turned into a bustling New York City suburb in the building boom following World War II.
In 1953, Hicksville attempted to incorporate itself as the Incorporated Village of Hicksville. Many residents felt that by incorporating as a village, the community would be run more effectively than by the Town of Oyster Bay. A petition had been signed with 6,242 signatures from residents in favor of the plan.
However, these plans were unsuccessful, and Hicksville remains an unincorporated area of the Town of Oyster Bay.
