5 Key Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Wantagh, NY Foundation Crack Repair Contractor

The foundation is one of the most important components of a house, but it’s also one of the most overlooked. It supports your Nassau County home, it provides insulation, it helps to prevent moisture from seeping in, it keeps pests out, and it even helps to prevent your house from moving. Needless to say, a foundation is pretty important, and as such, it needs to be sturdy.

Like any other part of your house, however, a foundation can sustain damages. Constant exposure to the elements, severe ground shifting, and poor installation are just some of the factors that can degrade and damage a foundation. When a foundation is damaged – even if the damage is minor – it needs to be addressed promptly. The longer the problem persists, the worse it will become, and eventually, the structural integrity of your entire Nassau County house could become compromised.

Cracks in the walls, sticking doors and windows, sloping floors, and leaks are just some of the signs of trouble. If you suspect your foundation is in trouble, you’ll want to schedule an appointment with a Wantagh, NY foundation crack repair specialist immediately. There’s just one problem: there are so many contractors that repair foundations in Nassau County; a quick search for “foundation contractors near me” will reveal dozens of results!

While choice is a good thing, when it comes to something as important as your home’s foundation, you don’t want to go with just any foundation crack repair company; you want to make sure that you hire the best. How do you do that? By scheduling consultations with a few foundation contractors near you and asking some key questions. Here’s a look at some essential questions that you should consider asking prospective Wantagh, NY foundation crack repair professionals before you decide which one to hire.

Are you licensed?

In order to provide services in New York, foundation crack repair contractors have to be licensed. Plus, in order to receive a license, contractors need to complete rigorous training and meet stringent requirements. When you’re interviewing prospective foundation contractors near you, find out if they’re licensed, as a license not only certifies that the company adheres to regulations, but it also confirms that they have received vital training. Don’t just take a contractor at their word; ask to see proof of their license so that you can confirm if it’s valid. A reputable Wantagh, NY foundation crack repair professional will be glad to honor our request.

Are you properly insured?

You’ll also want to make sure that the contractor you hire is properly insured. Like a license, Wantagh, NY foundation crack repair contractors need to be insured in order to provide professional services in New York. Plus, insurance helps to protect you from having to cover the cost of any issues that may arise. At a minimum, foundation contractors near you should have general liability insurance. In the event that they damage your Nassau County property, this coverage will help to pay for the related costs. If you’re considering hiring a company that employs a team, they should have workers’ compensation insurance, too. If their crew is injured while working on your property, this coverage will pay for their medical care.

Also like a license, don’t just take a contractor at their word; ask to see proof of their insurance policies and confirm that they’re valid. If you hire someone who isn’t insured or whose policies aren’t valid and something does go wrong, you could end up having to foot hefty bills.

How long have you been in business?

Sure, Wantagh, NY foundation crack repair contractors that are just starting out could provide reliable results, but when it comes to something as vital as your foundation, you don’t want to leave anything to chance. The longer a professional has been in business, the more experience they’ll have under their belts, and they’ll bring that experience to your project. Plus, when a contractor has a long-standing history, that’s a sign that they offer reliable results – otherwise, they wouldn’t be in business for long. Ideally, you should choose a foundation contractor near you that is well-established and that has been serving the Nassau County community for at least a few years.

What does the process entail?

Depending on the extent of the damage, repairing a foundation can be a complex process that may require some changes to your living arrangements until the job is done. A reputable Wantagh, NY foundation crack repair contractor will fully explain the process, including what to expect, how long it will take, and what you may need to do to prepare for the project. They’ll also let you know any other pertinent details, such as the type of materials they will be using, what time they will be starting and ending each day, and whether or not permits will be needed, and if so, if they will be securing them or if you will need to.

Do you offer a written estimate?

Credible Wantagh, NY foundation crack repair specialists will provide complimentary written price estimates. The estimate should be detailed, and highlight the cost of materials, labor, and anything else that you’ll be charged. If any of the contractors you speak with don’t offer an estimate, or they do but it’s verbal or they charge a fee, consider those red flags and cross them off your list.

Some information about Wantagh, NY

Wantagh is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, on Long Island, New York, United States. The population was 18,871 at the time of the 2010 census.

The Wantagh area was inhabited by the Merokee (or Merikoke) tribe of the Metoac Indians prior to the first wave of European settlement in the mid-17th century. The Merokee were part of the greater Montauk tribe that loosely ruled Long Island’s Native Americans. Wantagh was the sachem (chief) of the Merokee tribe in 1647, and was later the grand sachem of the Montauk tribe from 1651 to 1658. The Dutch settlers came east from their New Amsterdam colony, and English settlers came south from Connecticut and Massachusetts settlements. When the English and Dutch settled their competing claims to Long Island in the 1650 treaty conducted in Hartford, the Dutch partition included all lands west of Oyster Bay and thus the Wantagh area. Long Island then was ceded to the Duke of York in 1663–64, but then fell back into Dutch hands after the Dutch regained New York in 1673. The Treaty of Westminster in 1674 settled the land claims once and for all, incorporating Long Island into the now-British colony of New York.

Early settler accounts refer to Wantagh as ‘Jerusalem’, although earlier accounts refer to the area as ‘Wantagh’. The creek running north–south through Wantagh, and which has been covered up in many places but is still visible between the Wantagh Parkway and the housing developments west of Wantagh Avenue, was originally the Jerusalem River. The original post office was built in 1837, for Jerusalem, but mail service from Brooklyn began around 1780. The town’s first school was established in 1790. At some time around the 1880s, Jerusalem was renamed Ridgewood, and the town’s original LIRR station was named ‘Ridgewood Station’. Later, Ridgewood was renamed Wantagh to avoid confusion with another town in New York State with the same name.

Wantagh, NY

George Washington rode through Jerusalem on April 21, 1790, as part of his 5-day tour of Long Island. The Daughters of the American Revolution have placed a plaque on Hempstead Turnpike to commemorate Washington’s travels, which took him from Hempstead on Jerusalem Road (now North Jerusalem Road) to Jerusalem, on to Merrick Road. He then went on to head east, then circle back west on the north shore. During the Revolutionary War, British ships traveled up Jones inlet and came ashore to raid Jerusalem farms.
