How to Find a Trustworthy French Drain System Basement Installer in Suffolk County

Though you may use it on a regular basis and you know that it’s a valuable feature of your Suffolk County home, like a lot of New York homeowners, other than tidying it up every now and then, you probably don’t think much about maintaining your basement. That can end up being a big mistake. Because it’s either underground or it’s just above ground level, basements are notorious for flooding. A sudden wind-swept rain, a flash flood, a pipe burst; these types of events can turn your basement into a waterpark in the blink of an eye. In the unfortunate event that does end up happening, you’ll end up having to deal with major headaches and hassles, and unexpected and exorbitant expenses.

If your basement floods out, you need to act fast to remediate the problem. Whether you do the job yourself or you hire a remediation professional, cleaning up a flooded basement can be a cumbersome and costly endeavor. Your belongings could be unsalvageable, the structural integrity of your foundation may be compromised, and you could even end up having to contend with a mold problem in the future. Fortunately, there’s a way that you can minimize the risk of flooding – and the extensive damages, exorbitant expenses, and serious frustration that it causes. How? By being proactive and installing a Montauk, NY French drain basement system.

A French drain system basement is one of the most commonly used and recommended basement drainage systems in Suffolk County. That’s because they’re highly reliable, relatively easy to install, and easy to maintain. Essentially, these drains are trenches that are installed along the perimeter of the exterior walls of a basement. Perforated pipes and gravel are placed along the bottom of the trench, water from the basement floor flows into the drain, and a sump pump is used to divert the water away from your New York house.

Homeowners have been relying on this type of drainage system for decades, as they’re extremely effective, require minimal maintenance, and when they’re installed by a reputable contractor, they can be installed rather quickly, yet they’re built to last. In order to ensure that your Suffolk County home is well-protected and that your basement will stay dry, if you’re thinking about installing a French drain system basement, you want to be sure that you hire a reputable professional that has a proven track record of success. But how do you do that? Here are some handy tips that you can use to help point you in the right direction of a credible Montauk, NY French drain basement installer.

Ask Around

Start your quest for finding a credible Montauk, NY French drain system basement contractor by inquiring with the people you know. Ask your family, friends, colleagues at work, neighbors, or other home improvement contractors if they have a French drain system basement and if they had it installed after they moved into their house. If so, ask about the contractors they used, what type of experience they had, whether or not they were satisfied with the results, and if they would recommend the company.

When it comes to finding professionals that offer any service – including French drain system basement installation – asking the people you know if they can make recommendations is one of the best ways to find a reputable contractor. Why? Because you can usually rely on the people you know to provide their honest assessment.

Search Online

You can find virtually anything you need, including a Montauk, NY French drain basement installer. Head to your favorite search engine and search for “French drain system basement installation near me”, “internal French drain installation”, “indoor French drain near me”, or any other similar query, and you’re bound to get a long list of results.

Take the time to visit the websites of a few of the different contractors that come up in your search results. Because consumers rely so heavily on the internet to find the products and services they need, reputable Montauk, NY French drain basement installers will have well-designed, easy-to-use, and informative websites. Check out the information that’s offered on the site, see if you can find out about the company’s background and credentials, and look for testimonials or references.

Another way that you can use the internet to find Montauk, NY French drain basement installers is by checking out review sites; Angie’s List, Home Advisor, Yelp, or Google My Business, for example. These sites compile information about and reviews of all types of professionals, including French drain installers.

Schedule Consultations

Ideally, you should find at least three prospective Montauk, NY French drain basement installers. Once you do, take the time to schedule consultations with each one; preferably in-person rather than over the phone. During a consultation, not only will prospective contractors be able to learn more about your project, but you’ll be able to find out more about each contractor. Ask some key questions, such as:

These are just some examples of questions that you can ask; include any other questions that you feel are pertinent. In addition to asking questions, you should also pay attention to the impression each contractor made. Were they timely? Did they answer all of your questions? Did they seem professional? Were they friendly? Remember that first impressions go a long way and can say a lot about the quality of craftsmanship and the type of results you can expect a contractor to deliver.

Some information about Montauk, NY

Montauk is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of East Hampton in Suffolk County, New York, on the eastern end of the South Shore of Long Island. As of the 2010 United States census, the CDP’s population was 3,326.

Montauk derives its name from the Montaukett tribe, an Algonquian-speaking tribe who lived in the area. In 1614, Dutch explorer Adriaen Block encountered the tribe at Montauk Point, which he named Hoeck van de Visschers, or ‘Point of the Fishers’. Two decades later, in 1637, the Montauketts sided for their own protection with the New England settlers in the Pequot War in Connecticut. In the aftermath the Montauketts were to sell Gardiners Island. In 1648 what would become the Town of Easthampton (first Maidstone) was sold to settlers by the colony of Connecticut and the colony of New Haven while retaining the lands to the east, from the hills rising above where the first fort stood (Napeague, New York) to Montauk Point. The western boundary of today’s Hither Hills State Park is also known as the 1648 purchase line.

In 1653, Narragansetts under Ninigret attacked and burned the Montaukett village, killing 30 and capturing one of Chief Wyandanch’s daughters. The daughter was recovered with the aid of Lion Gardiner (who in turn was given a large portion of Smithtown, New York in appreciation). The Montauketts, ravaged by smallpox and fearing extermination by the Narragansetts, were provided temporary refuge by white settlers in East Hampton. Many short but famous battles ensued. The skirmishes ended in 1657. Fort Pond Bay derives its name from a Montaukett ‘fort’ on its shore. A deed was issued in 1661 titled ‘Ye deed of Guift’ which granted all of the lands east of Fort Pond to be for the common use of both the Indians and the townsmen.

Further purchase agreements were entered into in 1661, 1672 and 1686 which, among other things, allowed a group of Easthampton townsmen to graze cattle on the Montaukett lands. While some lands were protected in the agreements as forest land, for the most part, all of Montauk was maintained by the townsmen as a private livestock and fisheries operation. As a result of Montauk being operated as a livestock operation, it is considered to be the oldest cattle ranch in the United States.
